Once WWII began, the roles of the members of the Hitler Youth Program changed.
HITLERJUGEND
Hitlerjugend boys were a part of the final line of German defense in WWII. In 1943, a division of HJ boys was created to fight in the war. SS-Panzer Division Hitlerjugend was created and was mostly teenage boys. The division committed massacres, lost thousands of soldiers in battle, and eventually surrendered to the Allies. Additionally, during the fall of 1944, many Hitlerjugend boys dug anti-tank ditches around eastern German towns to delay the advancing Red Army and Allied forces.
BUND DEUTSCHER MADEL
The BDM during the war had the task of collecting donations of money and clothing, visiting wounded soldiers at hospitals, and sending care packages to soldiers. Some of the older girls would train to be nurses' aids.
